Hola!

Bienvenida/e/x! Welcome back!

Last blog post, we introduced the who, what, and why of our blog post series. This post, we’re going to dig deeper into WHO we are!

Like we said, we’re the co-owners, clinicians, trainers and community partners of Prickly Pear Therapy and Training. We’re a collective of folx committed to centering culture and healing in all that we do.

Prickly Pear Therapy & Training was started by Drs. Hurtado and Serrata in response to the need to not only respond to the mental health needs of the Latina/e/x community, but also in response to the need for a healthy organization for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) clinicians and therapists who do this work.

We attempt to foster safe spaces (even here, with this blog) for our BIPOC community members who are often embedded within structures where they are, at best, not represented culturally, and at worst, actively oppressed and traumatized.

We are experts in providing interventions that are understanding of the experiences of trauma, multicultural identities and neuro diversity. For example, some interventions that our team specialize in are: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, (ACT), Somatic Experiencing (SE), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to name a few.

We are consultants who provide training and consulting services for social justice organizations. We see providing trauma-informed organizational support as embedded in liberation psychology where the experiences of individuals who are traditionally at the margins are validated and centered in organization cultures and structures. We help organizations make this shift.

And if that wasn’t enough, we are experts in psychological assessments and evaluation where we provide assessments and relevant recommendations for adolescents and adults using a neuro-affirmative approach. This means we consider cultural, sensory, communication, and cognitive factors when understanding a client’s assessment question (e.g., Do I have ADHD?) and work collaboratively with them to understand how their brains operate from a strength-based perspective.

In summary, we:

  • Are a collective of BIPOC folx committed to centering culture and healing in all that we do;
  • Foster safe spaces individually, in organizations and communities;
  • Are experts in providing interventions that are understanding of the experiences of trauma, multicultural identities and neuro-diversity;
  • We are consultants who provide training and consulting services for social justice organizations;
  • Are experts in psychological assessments and evaluation where we provide assessments and relevant recommendations for adolescents and adults using a neuro-affirmative approach.
